Charles “Charlie” Shasteen
1948 - 2024

Charles “Charlie” Shasteen, 75, of McLeansboro, IL passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024 at his home.

He was born December 22, 1948 in McLeansboro, the son of John and Mary Shasteen.  On June 19, 1970, at New Salem Baptist Church in Dale, IL, he married Linda (Prince) Shasteen.  The couple just celebrated 54 years of marriage in June.

Charlie worked many jobs throughout his lifetime. He had been a coal miner, a supervisor for Orkin, and he and his wife, Linda, owned and operated the L&C Furniture and Appliance store that used to be on the west side of the square in McLeansboro for many years.  He enjoyed buying properties and fixing them up before selling them.  Linda knew that when Charlie was putting the finishing touches on a place, that meant it was time for her start packing to move to a new place.  Linda and Charlie spent 20 years of winters in Satsuma, FL where he loved to ride his golf cart with his dogs.  They enjoyed taking the RV and pontoon boat on trips.  Charlie was blessed with many close friends.  A group he has known since first grade would still get together every other week to visit.  He also enjoyed playing cards, and met with friends to play poker weekly.  Every morning, Charlie would take his beloved dog, Milo, for a ride.  After Charlie’s two cups of coffee, Milo would wait at the door for him, and Charlie would take Milo out to Odd Fellows Cemetery in McLeansboro and let him exercise and enjoy the weather.  To all those who knew him, Charlie was a good man who always helped the underdog, and would always help others any way he could.  He is deeply missed by his wife, children, Milo, friends and family.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Linda Shasteen of McLeansboro, children Steffany (Prince) Shasteen and Randy Shasteen of McLeansboro, grandchildren Hannah Wilson of Mt. Vernon and Gabrielle Russell of Eldorado, brothers Harley Wayne Shasteen of Norris City and Cecil Shasteen of McLeansboro, and three great-grand children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Shasteen, and two brothers Hillard Shasteen and Jean (Gene) Shasteen.

In accordance with Charlie’s wishes, his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be planned at a later date.  Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.gholsonfuneralhome.com
