1943-2025
Carrol J. Humphrey, affectionately known as CJ, passed away on January 23, 2025, at Wabash General Hospital in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He was born on January 25, 1943, in Hartford, Kentucky, to Jim (J.W.) and Rene (Ward) Humphrey.
CJ graduated from Livermore High School in 1961 and proudly served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Germany. He spent much of his career as an underground coal miner and construction worker. His mining work included time at Peabody at Austin 4 and HR Wood in Morgantown, Kentucky, before retiring after 20 years at Pattiki Coal Mine in Carmi, Illinois.
After retirement, CJ enjoyed restoring Allis Chalmers tractors, attending flea markets and auctions-where he occasionally served as an auctioneer-and caring for his miniature horses. A devoted member of the Jehovah's Witness congregation in Carmi since 1978, CJ found great joy in sharing his faith with others.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Linda (Tannahill) Humphrey; his children, Rodney (Linda) Humphrey, James Brent (Michelle) Humphrey, and Bridgett (Scott Parker) Humphrey; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters, Patricia Locher and Pixie Graham; six brothers, Richie, Tommy, Roy, Rondy, Eddie, and Mickey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Logan Humphrey; and a brother, Harold Humphrey.
Per CJ's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be left at denningfamilyfuneralhome.com. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
