1944-2024
Carol Gene Griffis (nee Hughes), age 79, passed peacefully from this life on August 19, 2024, in Knoxville, Tennessee, following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by family and friends who walked her home gracefully with love, prayers, songs and stories. Born on December 23, 1944, in Eldorado, IL, Carol spent her early years in Evansville, Indiana, where she graduated from North High School and attended Evansville College for two years. She later moved to Florida and for the past twenty years she lived in Knoxville, where she could be closer to her children and grandchildren, and was a member of Phi Mu.
Carol is survived by her husband, Jim Griffis; children, Heather White (husband Will); James Griffis (wife Susie); Jennifer Eason (husband David); Janeen Covell (husband Tim); Jonna Harkness (husband Tim); brother, Johnny Hughes; grandchildren Garrett, DJ, Rylee, Benaiah, Olivia, Tina, James, Kayli, Courtney, Janae, David, Neal, Megan, Elissa; and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, John Hughes; mother, Neva June Hughes; son, Jeff Griffis; and brother, Alan Hughes.
A talented pianist, Carol found joy in music, both in her home and as church pianist for many years. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and the countless birds she insisted on keeping well fed.
Funeral services for Carol Griffis will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, with burial at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Carmi. Family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Baptist Children's Home and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Donations may also be mailed to 609 W. Main St. Carmi, IL. 62821.
