WLC Management Firm’s Saline County facilities donate three pieces of equipment to the SIC Nursing Program while students were out for the holidays.
Southeastern Illinois College nursing students returned from the holidays to find some Christmas presents awaiting them from WLC Management Firm.
Saline Care Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Carrier Mills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Eldorado Rehab and Healthcare (all of the Saline County facilities under WLC) pitched in and donated a new Hoyer Lift and two suction machines so students would have the most up-to-date equipment the hospitals are using for learning.
Staff from all three facilities showed up for the surprise donation during a nursing instructors’ meeting about the upcoming semester. Amy Murphy, Director of Nursing at SIC said this donation will have a significant impact on skills lab instruction in fall and spring semesters.
“Our existing equipment was becoming very old and unsafe for full procedure practice,” said Murphy. “What a wonderful show of support! Our students will enter practice with better knowledge of modern equipment.”
WLC manages and staffs seven long-term living and rehabilitation facilities in Harrisburg, Carrier Mills, Eldorado, Benton, Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, and Greenville and works with SIC often on student clinical work.
“We are all honored to donate these very important pieces of equipment to the faculty and students,” said Scott Stout, CEO of WLC and member of the SIC Nursing Advisory Council. “Our community is so very fortunate to have such an excellent program.”
SIC President Dr. Jonah Rice was also present for the exciting announcement.
“The board and entire staff here at SIC appreciate the great relationship with our local healthcare facilities, and gifts like these from Mr. Stout and WLC Management will keep our nursing program cutting edge,” said Rice.
The Southeastern Illinois College nursing program is ranked #1 in the state of IL. The program began in 1955 with a class of 13 students in the lower level of Harrisburg High School. It was the only program of its kind in Illinois, south of St. Louis, at that time. Since then, it has grown to approximately 100 students each year and includes online and traditional classes. The SIC nursing programs will be accepting even more students this fall, as recently approved by the Board of Trustees, as nurses are in high demand.
