SWIRCA & More Receives Meals on Wheels Designation

SWIRCA & More is excited to announce that its Nutrition program recently became a Meals on Wheels designation and will now be known as Meals on Wheels Southwestern Indiana.

To formally announce and celebrate the new Meals on Wheels site, SWIRCA & More will have a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 19, 2018 at SWIRCA & More’s Ivy Café, which is located at 16 W. Virginia Street, Evansville, Indiana. The Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana will be present to aid in the ribbon cutting ceremony, which will begin at 10:30 am.

“We are extremely proud to have the designation of Meals on Wheels of Southwestern Indiana,” said Rhonda Zuber, President of SWIRCA & More. “Malnutrition and senior hunger is a real threat to our area seniors and we are committed in providing hot, nutritious meals to local seniors daily and fighting senior hunger in our communities.”

Through the Nutrition Department, SWIRCA & More provides 700 lunch site and home delivered meals every day that are prepared, cooked, and delivered from our own kitchen. Meals are delivered by volunteers to 16 congregate meal site locations in Vanderburgh, Warrick, Gibson, Posey, Perry, and Spencer counties. Meals are packaged in a tray with a film top and can be placed in a microwave or conventional oven to be heated up.

All meals, which are served Monday thru Thursday 9am to 1pm, are provided on a contribution basis. Individuals must be 60 years or older to qualify for the program. There are no set income eligibility requirements, and no one is ever turned away due to lack of payment. Due to the substantial loss in funding, SWRICA was forced to shut down all meal sites and routes on Fridays. To ensure homebound clients don’t go without food an extra meal is sent to them on Thursdays.

We encourage seniors who are willing and able to visit our Ivy Café, which serves lunch from 11am to noon, four days a week,” stated Karyn Gipson, SWIRCA & More’s Nutrition Director. “Serving as one of Evansville’s local lunch sites, it’s a great place to receive a hot meal and fellowship.”
