HARRISBURG, Ill. (April 14, 2016) — Southeastern Illinois College’s Mu Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society inducted fifteen new members during an induction ceremony held on April 5.
The honor society allows students to give back to the community through service-oriented activities, such as the organization’s annual American Red Cross blood drive held at SIC.
Brenna Butler, current PTK president, stated “Phi Theta Kappa allows me to be a part of an excellent group of people who values service to others and who also set high academic standards for themselves.”

Vice president Emily Watson said, “It is so exciting to see the amount of new members this year at SIC. Not only does Phi Theta Kappa give us the opportunity to do some really great fundraising and volunteer work for different charities and organizations, but it reminds us that we are responsible and accomplished college students.”
Watson is currently organizing a new service project for PTK in cooperation with St. Francis Care Shelter in Murphysboro, and PTK is calling it “Stress Less, Play with a Pet.”
“We are going to have a food and supplies drive at SIC to benefit St. Francis Care, a local no-kill animal shelter. In return, the shelter is bringing puppies on a scheduled finals day. This gives the students a chance to spend time in between their rigorous exams playing with puppies, and a chance for the puppies to potentially find a forever home. It is Phi Theta Kappa’s first and foremost priority to do things that benefit not only our students, but the community as a whole.”
Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918 and is the official community college honor society with nearly 100 years of dedication to recognizing academic excellence. It is currently the largest honor society in American higher education with more than three million members and 1,300 chapters in nine nations. Membership is based on superior academic achievement and is conferred only by invitation of the local chapter. PTK recognizes and rewards high-achieving students and provides opportunities to develop leadership skills.
