Southeastern Illinois College has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
For SIC, #GivingTuesday is about the students. SIC’s goal is to have 100 donors give a gift of any amount to demonstrate their commitment to helping students succeed. All donations received will be split between the SIC Foundation and the Alumni and Friends Association to go towards scholarship opportunities.
“The Southeastern Illinois College Foundation and Alumni and Friends organization support local students by helping to meet their financial needs through scholarships as they pursue their education,” said Chad Flannery, executive dean of student services. “Students need this assistance now more than ever, and Giving Tuesday allows us to partner together to meet local student needs. This is why we are asking for 100 donors to give any amount. It could be $25 or $1,000, every dollar counts when it comes to students in financial need.”
Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
“Community philanthropy is essential to schools and non-profits, and that philanthropy is what allows these institutions to provide vital services to our communities,” said Flannery. “Because schools and non-profits work for the collective good locally, #GivingTuesday provides individuals with the ability to give to those entities who work for our good. #GivingTuesday captures that community partnership and collaboration.”
#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. This year, #GivingTuesday falls on November 28. #GivingTuesday harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. It inspires people to take collective action to improve their communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. #GivingTuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together.
