Over 230 high school students were given the opportunity to look into Southeastern Illinois College’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs by attending the Applied Technology Spotlight Day on Thursday, Dec. 5. The event provided some hands-on experience in the multiple fields of study available.
Area high school juniors and seniors were invited to learn more about applied technology programs such as, coal mining technology, cosmetology, criminal justice, diesel technology, early childhood education, information technology, outdoor recreation, outfitter wildlife management, powersports technology and welding technology. The students were allowed to visit two programs of their choice.
Head shotgun team coach and outfitter wildlife management (OWL) instructor, Jordan Hammersley led the first OWL session.
“Spotlight Day gives High School students the opportunity to visit campus, hear about our programs, meet some of our faculty, and make an informed decision about their collegiate future,” said Hammersley. “This event gave me the opportunity to speak to around 40 prospective students about our very new outfitter wildlife management program here at SIC, many of which were hearing about it for the first time. This is great, because word-of-mouth will be extremely helpful in publicizing a new program.”
Students who only wanted to visit one program also listened to speaker Amy Mings, SIC’s career evaluator. Mings explored hiring practices and what is expected of newly hired employees.
