SI SUPRT, the Southeastern Illinois Substance Use Prevention, Recovery, & Treatment Council, a group formed to prevent and reduce substance use and increase recovery supports by promoting community level change through collaboration, will be hosting a National Night out event on Thursday, October 10th from 5-7 pm. Terri Cain was a guest on a recent Open Line program and she gave us the details of the event…
“It’s next Thursday at College Heights Baptist Church in Eldorado. We are going to have food provided by Star Baptist Church in Eldorado. They are providing hamburgers, hotdogs and cookies. Everybody’s welcome. We’re going to have enough food for anyone who wants to come. Senator Dale Fowler is providing soft drinks and other things. We are going to have other food like cotton candy and kettle corn. The Eldorado Men’s Club is cooking. We’re going to have lots of stuff going on. The idea is, I brought this up to the council and they were very excited about it, we’re hosting it in Saline County this year, even though we serve Gallatin, Saline, White, and Hamilton Counties. Everyone is invited, but we could really only have it in one place and try to do one thing well. We certainly want other communities to take it on and do something like it next year.”
The event will feature in addition to free food, some entertainment as Cain explains…
“We’ve got some entertainment. We have a young man from the community, the Eldorado area, Justice Kroll. He’s a singer. I’ve not heard him, but I’m going to hear him. Then a National Gaurdsman, who is on our council, Seth Knopp, is going to do some singing. I might sing a song or two. I know. Completely crazy. I play guitar. We’re going to have some entertainment like that. We may have a magic show. The Mayor of Eldorado, Rocky James, has a nephew who does some magic. We’re hoping he can come. The program too will just talk about why we are doing what we are doing and why people are there and what we are trying to get across, which bringing law enforcement together. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who use substances get involved with the law in a negative way and we are trying to say, ‘Hey.’ Law enforcement, of course, has a bad rep in some ways and that’s not what we want to build. We want to foster the good things.”
Law enforcement and public servants will be on hand for the event to give the public a chance to meet and embrace the service they provide to the community and surrounding area. In addition there will be an opportunity to hear messages of hope and recovery. Misty Butler will be sharing her recovery story. There will also be some other informal events like cornhole and lots of prize giveaways. You must be present to win!
This afternoon, Egyptian Health Department will be hosting an open house and ribbon cutting for the Recovery Resource Center located at 715 E. Church Street in Harrisburg. The Recovery Resource Center will serve as a central point of information to help individuals and families navigate substance use treatment and recovery services. The open house will be held from 12 pm to 4 pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
