White County Sheriff Doug Maier is warning residents about a possible scam affecting computer users. A White County resident told the Sheriff’s Department that on Thursday, November 10th, she was using her computer when it locked up. A phone number appeared on the screen to fix the issue.
The resident was told that the fix would cost $299.99 and that she could see them working on the screen and that the woman who answered the call could see her through the webcam. To pay the fee, a check was held up to the camera. The reporting resident’s husband then tried to cancel the “repair” and the work stopped after a lower price of $199.99 was asked and refused.
Sheriff Maier wants to make the public aware of this possible scam, and to contact a reputable source for computer repair. The public is advised to not use online sources that contact you after a problem has occurred.
