The Carmi White County School Board met briefly Monday night for its regular monthly meeting. Scott Mareing was there and has this report…
The district has been working with Paul Lunsford, the school architect, on summer maintenance projects. He sought local and/or public bids and received one bid for finishing the roof on the Jefferson Attendance Center in the amount of $105,000. The board accepted the bid, and work should be done by this summer. This is the last project the district will work on this year.
Vocational Director Bart King updated the board on the guidelines of the college and career pathway endorsement requirements. He said the district has partnered with SIC and local business for an internship for students for on-the-job training. They’ve lined up sponsorships with industrial arts, industrial maintenance and CNA’s, but would like to take things slow and get ready for more sponsors by next spring. So it was recommended that the Board of Education opt out of the College and Career Pathway Endorsement, which the board agreed to.
The board also approved that monthly meetings will continue to be held on the third Monday of each month, but will begin at 6 PM, instead the current start time of 7 PM, effective immediately. Next month’s meeting will be held on the second Monday, May 12th, to allow for the board organization requirement to be met. Also, the September meeting will be held on the fourth Monday, September 22nd to allow for the budget window requirement to be met. In January of 2026, the board will meet on Tuesday, January 20th because Monday is Martin Luther King Day; and the February 2026 meeting will be held on Tuesday February 17th due to the President’s Day holiday.
The Consent Agenda was approved. It continues that First Bank will remain the district’s permanent depository for school funds, and $175 in donations were accepted for the Brownsville School.
In the Superintendent’s report, Jarrod Newell announced the dates and times for end-of-year events. The Prom will be held on April 25th at 5:30 PM, the One-Niter will be held on May 2nd and 3rd at 7:30 PM, High School awards day is May 8th at 10:15 AM, the Baccalaureate will be on May 11th at 6 PM, High School Graduation and Graduation Party will be May 13th at 7 PM, Junior High Awards Day and Completion Ceremony is May 22nd at 6 PM, last day for Unit #5 students is May 29th and the last day for Unit #5 staff is May 30th.
The board went into Closed Session at 7:17 PM to discuss personnel and collective negotiations.
