Senior Wrestlers Recognized
Carmi-White County’s two senior wrestlers, Matthew Woods and Austin Wheeler, were honored prior to their final home matches Tuesday at McDougal-Evers Gym.
And both picked up a victory. In fact, Woods had two.
Terry Gholson’s Bulldogs wrestled both Goreville and Fairfield on the night. Woods, the CWC 220 pounder, picked up a forfeit against Goreville, then pinned his Fairfield counterpart, Connor Dagg, in 3 minutes, 9 seconds. Wheeler, at 182 pounds, was pinned by Goreville’s Zac Holland in first match, but came back to pin Fairfield’s Ike Downen in 1:44 later in the night.
Goreville doubled up the Bulldogs 36-18 and Fairfield topped the ‘Dogs 45-24.
In addition to Woods’ victory, the ‘Dogs also got wins from Blake Pollard and Jake Rider against Goreville. Rider picked up a forfeit at heavyweight and Pollard, at 160, pinned Jordan Davidson, in 1:23.
Pollard was also involved in, easily, the most exciting bout of the night against Fairfield’s Noah Koontz. Pollard scored a takedown in the final 2 seconds of the third period to tie Koontz at 6, but Koontz won the bout in overtime, 8-6, with a takedown of his own.
Carmi’s four wins against Fairfield came from Wheeler, Woods, Rider and Gavin Brown. Rider pinned his opponent in :42 at heavyweight and 132-pounder Brown pinned his counterpart in 3:39.
