Scates Assume Democratic Leadership
The Scates family will be leading the White County Democratic Party following the footsteps of their family, who have been involved in politics for many years.
Tim Scates was elected the new chairman of the local Democrats Thursday night at a special meeting called by outgoing chairwomen Nancy Mitchell.
Mitchell explained, “After serving the party as chair for close to 20 years, and sharing that duty with Tom Scates over the years, it is time to step down.”
Mitchell went on to say, “The party needs new and younger blood, as we face a growing conservative base in Southern Illinois, we need someone willing to dispel many of the less than truthful statements coming from our representatives, who tend to use fear, for example trying to convince everyone the Democrats are going to take away your guns. That’s not going to happen, but those are the things that have to stop, if we are ever going to get over the political divide in the state, as well as the country.”
Patrick Scates will serve as vice chairman. Melissa Kittinger will retain her position as secretary-treasurer.
