Rotary welcomes new member at Thursday meeting

It was a day for business at Thursday’s meeting of the Carmi Rotary Club. President JR Hubele turned the floor over to Tom Logan, who discussed a big event for the club, the induction of a new member.

Tom told the club that next Thursday the club would induct its newest member, Dr. Patrick Haskell. For many years, Judge Henry Lewis has handled the duties of welcoming new members to the club, but in his absence, the Rotary assistant district governor, Janice Alka of Mt. Carmel will take on the role as MC of the induction ceremony.

Tom stressed to the members, that an induction ceremony would be a perfect time to invite potential new members. Janice Alka has a treasure trove of Rotary information, and would be a great resource to spread the Rotary word to prospective members.

Rotarian Andy Williams threw out some ideas for future fundraisers, and the club more or less settled on another fish fry. The exact date was not determined, but it will be held sometime later this spring.

In other business, the club reflected on the recent trivia contest, that was another big success. While attendance was down slightly, the enthusiasm wasn’t. The next event will be held on Saturday, November 4th. The club has set a goal of having at least 16 teams that night. Anyone and everyone that has an interest in trivia, should mark their calendars right now for that night.

Randy Adams won the 50/50 drawing and managed to pull the pink ball out of the can to claim the day’s jackpot. Ironically, Randy Douglass was named as the day’s phantom, making it an all “Randy” day of winners!

The Carmi Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at the First United Methodist Church in Carmi. Anyone wishing to learn more about this worldwide civic club is more than welcome to attend a meeting or speak with any Carmi Rotarian.
