RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon hosting classes for youth

Three specialized classes for youth of all ages are scheduled in Mt. Vernon this fall. Help high schoolers prepare for the ACT test, or bring your child to one of two Musikgarten classes to get active.

High school juniors and seniors are invited to attend ACT Prep, a class designed to teach reading, English, science, and math skills necessary to do well on the test. Instructor Jeremy Mays will also provide tips and techniques to improve test-taking skills.

The class costs $89, plus $20.27 for Barron’s ACT 2016 Edition textbook, which is required and will be available for purchase at the first session. ACT Prep meets from 9 a.m. – noon, Saturdays from Sept. 10 through Oct. 15 at the RLC MarketPlace, Room 203, in Mt. Vernon.

Children between the ages of 3 and 5 can spend part of the morning moving and singing at Musikgarten’s Cycle of Seasons class. Instructor April Tennyson will lead several activities to build the sensory-motor foundation for learning with songs, movement, exploration of instruments, and stories for the children to act out and embellish.

The class costs $30 per session, plus a $40 supply fee. The first session meets 8:30 – 9:15 a.m. Mondays from Sept. 12 through Oct. 24. The second session meets from 8:30 – 9:15 a.m. Mondays from Oct. 31 through Dec. 5.

Younger children, between the ages of 0 and 3 ½, can attend Musikgarten’s Family Music class with their parents. Together, the class will join Tennyson in songs, chants, movement, dance, and games to focus on coordination, body awareness and control, exploration of space, and a number of musical instruments.

The class costs $45 per session, plus a $40 supply fee. The first session meets 9:30 – 10 a.m. Mondays from Sept. 12 through Oct. 24. The second session meets from 9:30 – 10 a.m. Mondays from Oct. 31 through Dec. 5.

Parents are asked to attend the Musikgarten classes with their child. Each family will receive a CD to continue the fun at home. Both classes will be held at the RLC MarketPlace, Room 204, in Mt. Vernon.
