Relay for Life Set for Friday

Relay for Life

Well, the weather is cooperating with mild temperatures expected to be in the sixties, just right for Friday’s Relay for Life event to be held at the track and football field at Carmi White County High School.

The evening will actually get underway at 5 when concessions open and registration for survivors and caregivers. Luminaria sales will also begin at 5.

Opening ceremonies will get underway at 6 with a welcome from JC Tinsley, WROY/WRUL General manager, who will serve as master of ceremonies again this year. The opening ceremony will follow the torch run, coordinated by Jenny Howard.

The opening ceremony will include the presentation of the colors by American Legion and VFW, to be followed by the National Anthem performed by Laney York.

Pastor Lee Hicks will provide the opening prayer, which will be followed by the first lap, a survivor lap. Those walking the survivor lap will be escorted by the Southern Illinois Showstoppers and members of the Mandalorian Mercs, Rebel Legion and the 501st.

The second lap will be dedicated to the caregivers, with the third lap a team lap.

Tim Ash will perform at 6:30. He will be followed by Mark Rogers and the Appetizers at 7. Laney York will be back on stage at 8. That will be followed by the Southern Illinois Showstoppers.

The Luminaria ceremony will get underway at 9. That will be followed by the closing ceremony, which includes the announcement of the raffle winners, best campsite, most team spirit, incredible edible and Rookie of the Year.

There will be plenty of food available, as Brad Cox will be serving his award winning barbecue, and Jeannie McGarvey will provide nachos, while the Home Extension will be selling baked goods.

There are 13 teams participating this year with a goal of $40,000 to be raised for the fight against cancer.
