Public Outcry Following Sentencing Prompts Statement from Carmi Police Chief

A slew of calls and messages inundated Carmi Police Chief Jason Carter following at least one in particular of Wednesday’s White County court sentencings.  That prompted a press release Thursday in which the city’s top law official says the police aren’t typically involved in court proceedings nor plea agreements.  He says officers work hard to develop evidence and provide solid cases on incidents to get justice for victims.

We try our best and are sometimes failed by the court system as well as the victims are.

Specific questions and outrage surrounded how a Criminal Sexual Abuse charge could be a misdemeanor and not a felony.  Carter reiterated that officers have no control over the statutory assignments of charges as it’s set by lawmakers and not even the States Attorney or Judge.
