Professional Development workshops available at RLC for local specialists

Five focused workshops are available this fall at Rend Lake College for professionals in the culinary or health care industries. With options on all three campuses, locals have the chance to freshen up on their skills or add new abilities into the mix.

To learn more about these workshops, contact RLC’s Community and Corporate Education Division at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1714.

Culinary

Restaurant employees and businesspeople can register for one of two Food Sanitation workshops in RLC’s district this fall. This refresher workshop will help participants identify the causes of food-borne illnesses; identify and apply correct procedures for cleaning and sanitizing; recognize problems and potential solutions associated with facility, equipment, and layout; and understand the Illinois code related to food service establishments.

Successful completion of this workshop prepares participants to take the ServSafe exam for Management and Sanitation Training. The exam is given at the end of the second session. Students must bring photo identification to class. The ServSafe Essentials Textbook is required and available at the RLC Bookstore or online. The workshop costs $175.

Next month, participants can register for an 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. workshop, held on Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sept. 17 at the RLC MarketPlace, Room 338, in Mt. Vernon. The following month, another session will be held from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Oct. 22 at the Murphy-Wall campus, Room 101, in Pinckneyville.

Health Care

Former certified nurse assistants (CNAs) who have not worked in the field for two years or more can register for CNA Recertification. Upon an approved background and fingerprint check, participants will be scheduled at their convenience to perform the 21 basic skills at a local clinical site. Successful performance of these skills provides access to the written test.

The workshop costs $275. Participants must be eligible by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Healthcare Worker Registry. Information on eligibility is available by contacting the Illinois Nurse Aide Registry at 217-785-5133.

For those who teach CNA courses, the Approved Evaluator Skills Refresher Course for CNA Instructors workshop will meet with instructor Joyce Steber from 12 – 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the RLC MarketPlace, Room 241, in Mt. Vernon. This course will verify the participant’s competency through the demonstration and performance of selected skills, as determined by the IDPH.

The workshop costs $85. Participants must have completed the Train the Trainer Online Refresher program prior to registration for Skills Refresher.

Instructor Joyce Steber will also host CNA Instructor Course for RNs (registered nurses) who want to become a CNA instructor in Illinois. During this workshop, Steber will prepare participants to develop and effectively teach basic CNA programs, including the online Train the Trainer and Alzheimer’s Disease portions and the face-to-face Approved Evaluator Workshop Skills portion.

The workshop will be held online Monday, Sept. 12 through Friday, Oct. 21, but will meet once from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at the RLC MarketPlace, Room 241, in Mt. Vernon. It costs $599, plus textbook fees. The deadline to register is Wednesday, Sept. 7. RNs must also meet the qualifications outlined in the June 2013 Illinois Administrative Code Instructor Requirements.

For locals hoping to become involved in their own health and wellness, Instructor Charlotte Henry will host Become a Patient Advocatefrom 5 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 in the Academic Building, Room 215, on the Ina campus.

During this workshop, Henry will discuss health information, where it is available, and how to use the information to improve the health and wellness of each participant and their loved ones. The workshop costs $10.
