New Speed Limit On Oak Street

Oak Street in Carmi has a new speed limit we learned yesterday.  It was 2018 when City of Carmi officials saw the need to reduce the speed in areas of the busy road, according to a release from the City of Carmi Police Department.  However, due to Oak Street technically being part of a State Highway, any changes would have to go through Illinois’ Department of Transportation.
Traffic related studies would follow for the next several months to enact a speed limit change.  IDOT officials conducted a field investigation of the site as well as analysis of traffic patterns and a thorough review of accident history.
As of yesterday, the new 35 mile per hour signs are posted and begin 235 feet west of Lexington Avenue for Eastbound Oak Street traffic.  West Bound Oak Street traffic will need to slow to 35 through about 175 feet West of Lexington before the limit goes back up to 40 mph.
The main intersection the area affects will be at Oak and Burrell Street.
