Jennifer Wiseman Agger addressing the Carmi Kiwanis Club at its weekly meeting, September 21, 2017
Transitioning from a military career to the private sector often brings with it financial, family and health issues. Such was the case with John and Jennifer Agger who were both serving in the Air Force stationed in Idaho when John was diagnoised with a rare form of pancreatic cancer as a result of exposure to Agent Orange during deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
John was transferred to Texas for treatments and later Jennifer was given a leave of absence to join him there. During the 2 ½ years of intense treatments as well as a strict protocol in the usage of holistic medicines, proved futile in saving John’s life. He passed away February, 2014.
Following John’s death, Jennifer retired from military service and she and their daughter, Emily, returned to Carmi where her father, Jerry Wiseman, was also battling terminal cancer.
It was during John’s fight with cancer that they were introduced to Welcome Home Troops — a support service founded in 2007 by Sue Rebar as a non-profit public charity to help veterans meet the challenges of transitioning from military life to civilian life. The organization became like family to John and Jennifer in their journey dealing with John’s cancer.
Although Welcome Home Troops offers varied services, the flagship program is Healing Through Play partnering with organizations like the Academy of Country Music Awards and NASCAR to provide special relief to military, veterans and their families.
In January of this year, Jennifer was invited to become a volunteer spokesperson for WHT which she graciously accepted. She states, “I am thankful for the perspective that I have gained which has allowed me to use my circumstances to help others.” She is now serving as an independent sales associate with one of the services offered by WHT, LegalShield. LegalShield offers a portfolio of legal and identity theft services that protect families, small businesses and commercial drivers’ legal rights and their identities.
