If you head out the White County Fair, and actually make it past the Malone’s Taffy stand, there are some new things to see along with predictable traditions. Sure, there’s the republicans and democrats peddling popcorn and 50 cent sodas, and the Lion’s Dunkin Stand still has a steady flow of folks. But new this year, you’ll find the Illinois S3DA archery program. State program president Jim Sharp explains…
“We’ve set up a target in the back of our trailer this week and are allowing kids to come out and shoot just for fun. There’s no charge.”
In addition to providing an opportunity for young people to come out and safely try something new, they have an opportunity to learn more about the program and area clubs.
“We’ve been here since Monday night and we’ve always had somebody out here shooting, boys and girls both. I think it’s been pretty neat. There have been a lot of kids interested in joining the program and that’s a good thing.”
Volunteers at the booth are also selling raffle tickets, $5 each or 5 for $20 in a “Save Our Range” effort. The winner will be revealed at Corn Days on Saturday, October 12th and will have the choice to win a Tailgater Traeger Grill, a Ruger 10/22, a Shotgun, Vortex Viper binoculars, a Barnett crossbow, Bear compound bow, or a $300 Visa Gift Card. The reason they need to raise funds…
“We’re trying to raise money for our local clubs. We actually have 4 clubs that are going to be joining our indoor club which is currently being relocated to the old Dollar General building here in Carmi. We’re raising money for rent and utilities for this coming winter. Carmi White County, NCOE Archery, Hamilton County Archery, and White County Archery will all be joining us at this one range.”
