Kelli Chapman was appointed to serve as President of the Board of Education for the next school year, Tom Scates was appointed Vice-President and Barb Mitchell was appointed Secretary.
Also, Board meetings will continue to be held on the third Monday of each month at 7 pm at the Jefferson Attendance Center in the new building, except in June, where it will be held on the fourth Monday,; on the fourth Tuesday in January and the third Tuesday in February.
The Board approved entering into an agreement with the City of Carmi to provide a school resource officer for the 2018-19 school year. The specific terms of the agreement will be approved at the May 21st Board meeting.
They accepted the recommendation of transportation director Bart King for the lease/purchase of a 25-passenger handicapped accessible bus for the Brownsville Attendance Center from Mid-West Bus Sales for $12,818 and a bid of $11,536 from Mid-West of a 14-passenger white activity bus for extracurricular and athletic events. Delivery of both vehicles is expected within 180-220 days.
Also approved were bids from Myers Floor Service of $15,560 for the sanding and refinishing of the small and large gym floors and from D.E. Martin Roofing of $82,000 for roof replacement over the small gymnasium, both for the junior/senior high school. The work will be paid from the fire prevention and safety fund.
The District is looking at replacing the roof over the northeast sections of the classrooms at the Jefferson Attendance Center due to the growing number of leaks.
In the Superintendent’s report, Brad Lee said the plan is to have an amended budget by next month’s Board meeting.
Lee noted that total state funding for fiscal year 2018 is $5.27 million, which includes about $350,000 in what is known as evidence based funding, due to the new state funding formula.
The annual high school Baccalaureate will be Sunday, May 6th at 6 pm at the high school auditorium, high school graduation will be Tuesday May 15th at 7 pm at the high school gym and the junior high completion ceremony is Friday, May 18th at 1 pm at the high school gym. Also, high school awards will be May 11th at 10:15 am the high school auditorium, junior high 7th and 8th grade awards May 18th at 1 pm at the high school gym, kindergarten completion ceremony May 16th at 9 am the high school auditorium, Brownsville awards at noon and commencement at 12:30 pm on Friday May 18th and Washington awards day on Wednesday May 23rd at 1 pm.
In other business, four Board policies were updated with final action set for next month’s meeting.
A Board policy concerning sexual harassment was approved.
Bids on consumable supplies were accepted.
And the Board accepted the retirement of Gail Renshaw as building custodian and noon-hour supervisor at Jefferson School effective April 5th, as well as the resignations of Clay Gray as 8th grade girl’s basketball coach and Penny Gunter as junior high school head volleyball coach, both effective immediately.
The Board went into closed session at 7:42 pm.
In the closed session, the Board employed Sarah Richards as a second grade teacher at Jefferson and reassigned Felicia Green as a fifth grade special education classroom aide at Washington next school year. Shannon Webb was employed as a junior high special education teacher, and Kimberly Anderson was reassigned as a part-time bus driver and aide for next year. Clinton Wolff was employed as the high school girl’s head basketball coach for next year, and David White was approved as a volunteer assistant high school softball coach for this season.
