A Crossville man was severely injured Tuesday afternoon in an oil well explosion east of Crossville.
White County Dispatch received a call at 12:49 pm and was advised that workers were bringing the injured man to meet first responders at Maier Grocery in Crossville. From there, the White County Ambulance Service transported 33 year old Steven Smith to a landing zone, where he was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Witnesses at the accident site told Sheriff Maier that they were working on the well when the well head broke loose and burst into flames. Smith was attempting to shut things down when the explosion occurred. The two other men were not injured.
It took the Crossville Fire Department more than one hour to extinguish the fire.
