The Carmi Rotary club had a short meeting on Thursday, as several members were away from town for the day.
The members had a quick discussion about the upcoming trivia contest, which will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at the American Legion in Carmi. More details will be sent out soon on this big event.
The main topic of discussion for the day was the plans to sponsor a Rotary Interact Club at the Carmi-White County Junior High. Interact is Rotary’s club for junior and senior high students. Rotary also has an organization known as Rotaract, which is the club for college aged young people.
President Patrick Haskell and Rotarian Randy Adams informed the club that they had a very positive and productive meeting with Junior High principal Bart King last week, and came away convinced that an Interact club could take hold in Carmi.
The pair explained that due to different lunch hours and other programs, the best time for the Interact club meetings would be 7:30 in the morning, before the first bell at 8:05. They explained this would even work for the bus students, who would have a slightly shorter time to meet.
There are no minimum membership requirements for the club, simply age requirements and a rule that at least one Rotarian will be on hand for each club meeting.
The plan for the Interact club will be to open it this year for 7th and 8th grade students, then grow with that group over the next few years. Long range, when this year’s 8th graders are seniors, the club will be filled with students from 7th through 12th grade.
There are already several students interested in taking the lead on this organization, and are busy recruiting other students. The Rotarians are going to have the district Interact chair pay a visit to Carmi in the next few weeks to finalize plans, then shoot for a January kick-off of the club in Carmi.
In club business, Randy Adams won the 50/50 and for an unprecedented 4th week in a row, the winning ball was pulled from the Cardinal can, meaning Randy took home the day’s cash prize. Lyn Stephens was named the day’s phantom.
The Carmi Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at the First United Methodist Church on Main Street in Carmi. Anyone wishing to learn more about this civic organization is welcome to attend a meeting or speak with any Carmi Rotarian.
