Carmi Police make weekend arrests; report early morning fire

Friday evening, 32 year old Joshua Newton of Haubstadt, Indiana was arrested in Grayville on a charge of DUI following a hit and run accident in Carmi.  Newton struck a street sign in the median of Highway 1 in front of the Carmi Vet Clinic at 5:22 pm and did not stop until he was apprehended.  Newton was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and improper lane usage.  Newton was transported to the White County Jail, and was later released after posting a total bond amount of $450. 15.

Saturday morning, Carmi Police arrested 36 year old John Nuckolls of Carmi on an Edwards County warrant following a traffic stop.  Nuckolls was pulled over at 5 am in the parking lot of Slay’s Carpet and was taken into custody on a contempt of court charge.  Nuckolls was later released from the White County Jail after posting a $175 bond.

Sunday morning, Carmi Police arrested 20 year old James Stevens at his 4th Street residence on a White County warrant for criminal trespass.  Stevens was taken into custody at 9 am and was also charged with possession of a controlled substance when bath salts were discovered at the residence. Stevens is being held at the White County Jail without bond pending a court hearing.

 

At 12:48 am Monday morning, a Carmi Police officer witnessed a building on fire while on routine patrol.  The Carmi Fire Department responded to the blaze at 404 Shipley Street phoned in by Officer Joshua Moore and extinguished the fire.  No one was in the building at the time of the fire, which is being investigated by the State Fire Marshall’s office.
