Busy Night for Carmi City Council

Council approved the annual property tax levy for the fiscal year ending December 31st. City CPA Keith Botsch said the total levy was $538,494, which includes $96,859 in the general fund, $362,835 in the police pension fund and $78,800 in the library fund. Botsch believes they will need to raise taxes at least five percent in the next two or three years, mainly due to annual increases in the police pension fund.

The council also approved two ordinances abating the 2018 tax levy for payment of general obligation bonds and certificate of abatement for the electric and water systems.

Robert Duckworth was reappointed to the Carmi board of fire and police commission for a term that runs from January 1st 2019 to December 31st 2021.

And an ordinance was approved adopting a policy prohibiting sexual harrassment for the city of Carmi, changing the time allowed to file a claim increased from 160 to 300 days.

Mayor Jeff Pollard thanked everyone that participated in the White County Christmas parade this past weekend.and thanked Lauren for planning all of the events. There was a very good crowd for the tree lighting ceremony.

Pollard welcomed the Car Corral, the Polaris and Can-Am dealer from Flora for moving to their new location here in Carmi on Industrial Drive. They’re now open to the public and will have their grand opening at a later date.

The city compost will be closing on Saturdays for the winter statring December 15th. Upon re-opening, they will look at only being open to the public supervised for one or two days a week and a monthly charge of $30 a month for a key. Many people are leaving things there that the EPA doesn’t allow and leaving the gate open when they leave and not returning the key.

TV’s and electronics are not to be left at the Newton Wire and Cable Building until there is an electronic recycling day, which probably will be next January or February.

And everyone running for alderman must have their petitions filed and turned in on Monday, December 10th.

A closed session was held beginning at 5:45 PM to discuss hospital litigation, with possible action to follow.
