Busy End of Year for Sheriff’s Department
The year 2018 ended on a busy note and 2019 started busy for the White County Sheriff’s Department with deputies responding to an aggravated battery incident, two domestic disputes, criminal damage to property and a report of aggravated arson.
Early Tuesday morning, around 12:30, White County Dispatch received several calls about a fight at 2476 County road 2125 East.
According to the report, authorities arrived at the scene to discover at least one victim has been injured and the suspect, Nicholas R. Kramer, who listed a Peoria, Ill., address had left the scene.
White County deputies, Grayville and Carmi Police officers and Illinois State Police were involved in the investigation that resulted in the arrest of Kramer, 39. Kramer was arrested at the Phillipstown crossroads and transported to the City County Jail in Carmi for processing.
Kramer remained in custody Wednesday facing charges of aggravated battery, reckless driving and driving on a suspended or revoked license. Kramer was also wanted on a Peoria County warrant.
Two people were injured in that incident, with one transported to the Fairfield Hospital for treatment. Another was transported by family to a local hospital for treatment of a possible broken finger.
On Christmas day, Dec. 25, the sheriff’s department responded to the residence of Joshua Lane Newman, 31, 1349 Sycamore Str., Carmi on a report of domestic battery. Apparently Newman had attacked his girlfriend, Taylor Hays, 21 of the same address.
Hays did not filed a complaint but was informed information would be provided to White County State’s Attorney Denton Aud, who would likely issue a warrant for Newman, but not on Christmas Day.
New Year’s Eve, the sheriff’s department received a report of criminal damage to property.
Jeffrey Scates of rural Shawneetown, reported damage to grain bins. located at 141 and the Herald Road. The report indicated the damage was caused by a semi-truck that hit a grain spout on a small hopper bin. The bin damage caused over 4000 bushels of soybeans to get wet. That investigation continues.
Sunday, Dec. 30, a deputy responded to a report of a fire in Crossville. The deputy arrived to discover Brad Maier, 51 of 312 State Street, outside of the residence, at 404 Fourth Street. He reported his wife, Rebecca L. Maier, 54, had set fire to the curtains in the mobile home in an attempt to burn down the residence. The deputy made his way into the mobile home, where he discovered Rebecca Maier standing in a hallway. The deputy removed her from the residence. She was treated by White County Ambulance Service personnel.
Crossville Fire Department placed exhaust fans in the residence to rid the building of smoke and advised the deputy they did not have to put out any fire, as Brad Maier had already extinguished the curtain fires.
Rebecca Maier was arrested and charged with aggravated arson, domestic battery and disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $1,500.
Last Friday, Dec. 28, the sheriff’s department responded to a domestic battery case in Norris City.
Roman D. Yates, 36, 581 County Road 1050 East, Norris City was arrested after he admitted to becoming physical with his significant other, Tasha M. Collins. The report indicated the two have children together and Collins is pregnant with Yate’s child.
Although Collins did not file a complaint, Yates was arrested and charged with domestic battery due to Collin’s statement and evidence of physical injury to Collin’s ear, where Yate’s allegedly had hit her.
Yates was transported to the City County Jail in Carmi, where bail was set at $5,000.
