The Carmi League of Arts will present “Sound of Music” June 24, 25 and 26 on the CWCHS stage. The production will be under the direction of Sherry Passmore and Lynn Cantrel. Zandrea Hafenrichter will direct the music and choreograph dance scenes. The show opened on Broadway in 1959, with Mary Martin playing “Maria”. Julie Andrews starred in that role in the movie version. League spokesmen say the theater version will be slightly different from the movie version, but they promise “one of the best and most elaborate shows ever presented on the local stage”.
In 1980, the League presented the “Sound of Music” under the direction of Charles “Buck” Russell. That show was produced by Sam Endicott and music directors were Pat Lewis, Betty Brown and Mike Croghan. “Maria” was played by Sandy Spence and Captain Von Trapp was played by Joe Mitchell. Betty Brown had the role of “The Mother Abbess”. The Von Trapp children were Erin Maloney, Stan Leavell, Debby Murphy, David Peters, Edie Spence, Krista Finch, and Elizabeth Paynter.
Auditions for June’s show will be April 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the CWCHS auditorium. An accompanist will be available. One may also audition to a cd or acapella. Please email Sherry Passmore at [email protected] for an alternate audition date if April 2 is not convenient.
“Sound of Music” is the League’s gift to the community in observance of Carmi’s Bicentennial. For more information, please visit their Facebook page.
