Busy Weekend Coming Up in Mt. Vernon, IL
- May 4th brings a host of events to Mt. Vernon!
- Enjoy the spring weather, shop at Market Days, visit the several Veteran’s Park events, and celebrate Cinco de Mayo a day early. The 2019 Mt. Vernon Market Days season will kick off on Saturday May 4thfrom 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. at Veteran’s Park. Market Days occur on the first Saturday of each month between May and September. This season’s dates are May 4th, June 1st, July 6th, August 3rd, and September 7st. Market Days are Mt. Vernon’s very own flea market and vendor fair. A variety of vendors sell items such as jewelry, hair bows, sports collectibles, kettle corn, plants, toys, home décor, lawn art, blacksmith items, pet products, antiques, purses, flea market finds, baked goods, and more. Vendors will be located both inside the Rolland Lewis Building and outdoors in the grassy area to the north of the building. Admission is free. Billy Bob’s BBQ will be offering concessions. Children can enjoy inflatables.
Comprehensive Connections will be holding their 4th Annual Celebration Day at Veteran’s Park on May 4th with a morning 5K, several art activities such as rock, marble, and salt painting, and coloring. Refreshments and flower hanging baskets will be available to purchase.
The Veteran’s Park lake on May 4th will host the launch of the Mt. Vernon Yacht Club. The club provides a fleet of remote-control boats and yachts of all sizes for kids and adults to crew around the lake. A 15-minute yachting experience costs $5. An Annual Membership to the Mt. Vernon Yacht Club is $30.
The Jefferson County Historical Village will hold their opening day for the season, May 4th. The grounds and buildings are open for tours every Saturday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. May through October. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.
Guero’s Mexican Restaurant is hosting a Cinco de Mayo Street Festival on South 9th St. from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 4th. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., kids can enjoy Mexican face painting, crafts, pinatas, and inflatables. A homemade salsa contest will begin at 2 p.m. with a Running with the Bulls 1K following at 2:30 p.m. From 3 to 8 p.m. guests can listen to live music and sign up to win several prizes. Street tacos, Mexican street corn, and other Mexican dishes will be available. Also, on May 4th, Roadhouse Harley Davidson is holding a Cinco de Quatro fiesta on their outdoor patio with free lunch provided by Agave Mexican Restaurant starting at noon.
