Motorists Urged to Share the Road

Motorists are Encouraged to Safely Share the Road with Farm Equipment

Illinois State Police  District 19 urges motorists to exercise caution when traveling on the Illinois roadways during the upcoming harvest season. As farmers begin to harvest their crops, there will be an increase in farm-related traffic on the highways.

“During this time of the year, drivers should remain especially alert for the addition of farm equipment on the roadways,” said District 19 Commander, Captain Cory Ristvedt. “Be prepared to encounter slow-moving vehicles and reduce your speed immediately,” he added.

Other farm and traffic safety tips include:  Avoid distractions while driving, i.e. texting, talking on hand-held cell phone, etc.·  Motorists should not attempt to pass farm equipment unless it is legal and safe to do· so, even if the equipment operator waves you around.  Look for turn signals.·  Maintain a safe following distance and be patient.·  Be prepared to meet oversized agricultural vehicles.·  Mount slow-moving emblems on the rear of farm vehicles to alert motorists.·  Avoid movement of farm machinery at sunrise and sunset, when visibility is limited.·

Remember to share the roadway with all travelers. Together, we can make this time of the year safe for everyone using Illinois roadways.
