Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is awarding nearly five million dollars in Adult Literacy Grants to help develop and enhance reading, math, writing and English language skills. White says, “An estimated 2.1 million Illinoisans need adult literacy and/or English language instruction.” Experts expect somewhere in the neighborhood of 13,500 individuals will be helped through adult literacy programs around the state this year, with more than 6,200 volunteer tutors providing instruction and guidance.
Locally, Illinois Eastern Community College’s location in Fairfield is the recipient of $55,000. The funds are specifically for Adult Volunteer Literacy. If you’d like information on becoming a volunteer tutor, call toll free 1-800-321-9511.
