RLC EMT Paramedic programs enrolling now for summer

Get into the life-saving business with Rend Lake College’s Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P) program. Enrollment is open now for the EMT-P associate degree and occupational certificate programs, both beginning Monday, June 4.

EMTP 1260 (Paramedic Services I) is a hybrid course that meets for eight weeks during the summer and is the first required course for both the degree and certificate programs. Students will work online for a portion of the course and the instructor will schedule face-to-face meetings on certain Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 9:30 p.m. at the RLC MarketPlace, Room 221, in Mt. Vernon.

In the classroom at the MarketPlace, students will interact with a mock ambulance and perform hands-on skills in collaboration with learning the didactic material.

Both programs, approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health, are designed to prepare students for a career as a paramedic in medical and ambulance services, fire departments, and industrial settings with learning in the classroom and laboratory on RLC’s campus plus hospital and field clinical settings.

Successful completion of the Emergency Medical Technician occupational certificate is a prerequisite for the EMT-P programs. Students may be in the process of obtaining their EMT licensure when applying.

Graduates of either the degree or certificate program can sit for the Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-P licensure examination. EMTs and paramedics have an annual median pay of $33,380, according to the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were approximately 250,000 jobs in 2016 with an expected increase of 15 percent by 2026 – much faster than average for most occupations.

To register for the June EMT-P courses or to learn more, contact RLC’s Allied Health Division at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1251 or[email protected] or advisor Marli Choate at Ext. 1769 or [email protected].

The Rend Lake College Paramedic program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.aahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
