Reis legislation addresses teacher shortages in the state

State Representative David Reis (R-Ste. Marie) has passed legislation out of the Illinois House intended to address teacher shortages throughout the state.

HB3080 Amends the Downstate Teacher Article of the Illinois Pension Code. For the period beginning July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2019, it increases the amount of employment as a teacher that a retired teacher may perform without impairing their retirement status.

Representative Reis says it makes more sense to hire retired teachers who have a proven history as a teacher than other qualified candidates who might have little to no experience in the classroom.

The bill was given final approval in the House on Wednesday and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
