Fairfield Memorial Hospital recently responded to a need to support a Beginners Safety Day in Edwards County. The Edwards County Ag in the Classroom program is sponsoring a “Beginners Safety Day” in collaboration with the FFA students at Edwards County High School. The group is educating K-3rd grade students about farm safety and will be using the masks donated by Fairfield Memorial Hospital to visually explain why masks should be worn to protect the lungs of farmers when they are cleaning out a grain bin.
This event takes place during “National Farm Health & Safety Week,” September 17th through 23rd, 2017. The Edwards County FFA students are presenting the following topics to both Albion Grade School and West Salem Grade School K-3rd Graders: Eye Safety, Hand Safety, Skin Safety, Breathing Safety, and calling 911. Each K-3rd grade student in attendance will be receiving a mini glove compartment safety kit and a take home booklet reviewing the safety concepts taught during the “Beginners Safety Day” event. The “Beginner Safety Day” event was created in an effort to educate on safety with the younger students, because statistics show that the majority of farming accidents with youth happens to children age seven and under.
In honor of National Farm Health & Safety Week, the FFA students put up banners, place educational boards about safety throughout the county at varying businesses, and present Public Service announcements during the week on WFIW Radio. This activity gives the students a chance to learn many of the skills the FFA program strives to teach their members such as leadership, responsibility, and public speaking skills.
