Carmi-White County Board getting ready for the upcoming school year

The Carmi-White County Board of Education held their July meeting on Monday night.

Dr. Amy Dixon filled in for Superintendent Brad Lee, who was ill.

The tentative Fiscal Year 2018 budget was approved. It will be on display from now until final action at the September 18th meeting for a minimum of 30 days. There will be revisions before final adoption based on final general state aid allocation, state and federal grant awards. Final auditing of the budget and any change following the audit.

They accepted the low bid from Gerber Life of $7,160 for the blanket and catastrophic student accident insurance with a renewal date of August 1st.  That’s a savings of $11,850, which is 62% less than the expiring plan.

The Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan as required by the Federal Mitigation Act of 2000 was approved.  It maintains elegibility for certain federal disaster assistance and hazard mitigation funding programs.  Each of the 14 jurisdictions that helped develop the plan must formally adopt a resolution.

In the Superintendent’s report, the opening of school is less than one month away.  August 14th and 15th will be teacher institute and work days. The first full day of school is Wednesday, August 16th.  School will dismiss 50 minutes early the first week of school.

The roofing projects at Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington schools have been completed.  Resurfacing of the high school track will begin today. And they’re making very good progress on the new concession stand and restrooms at the high school.

The state budget was passed, but the district will not get its general state aid payments if there is no mechanism in place to distribute state funds to public schools.

Work is progressing on a Chromebook agreement for the new junior-senior high school one to one technology initiative. It will contain rules and guidelines for appropriate use of the Chromebooks.

The district has received its final state aid payments and other payments totaling $$889,632, although it is still owed $557,234.

In other business, they accepted the low bids for gasoline and diesel fuel for a one year period from Wabash Valley Service Company of $1.696 a gallon for unleaded gasoline and $1.898 for bio diesel.

They also accepted the resignations of Jonathan Goematt as Brownsville bus aid effective this past June 22nd, John E. Choate as assistant junior high school baseball coach  and Kathleen Buchanan as special education individual aide at the Carmi-White County high school, both effective immediately.

The Board went into closed session at 7:28 p.m.
