The Carmi-White County Board of Education met on Monday night for their regular June meeting.
The amended Fiscal Year 2017 budget was approved. It has a positive balance of $1,647,602. This budget allows the District to maintain programs and provide dollars for facility upgrades for a positive teaching and learning environment.
The Board agreed to increase substitute teacher pay from $70 to $75 a day beginning with the next school year.
They also approved the district’s title one plan as part of the federal “every student succeeds act”, which is required by all local school boards.
The district has received its two state aid payments, totaling $398,211. The state still owes $830,897 from various other payments.
In the Superintendent’s report, Brad Lee said the roof work at the Jefferson school has been completed. Roof work is currently being done at Lincoln and Washington. Construction has begun on the concession stand and restrooms at the high school. Resurfacing of the track is supposed to begin the second week of July.
Lee hopes both sides will be able to reach an agreement on a budget and education funding during this week’s General Assembly special session.
And Lee will work on a preliminary budget for July and base the revenue off of this year’s figures.
In other business, the Board Scholars for the second semester were announced. There were 14 freshmen. 13 sophomores, ten juniors and nine seniors.
The annual prevailing wage act was approved.
Low bids were accepted for the semi-annual charge of cafeteria suppression systems, milk, trash hauling and continued membership in the Illinois Association of School Boards.
The board also accepted several resignations: Shirley Ritsch as a Crossville School crossing guard, Kathy Buchanan as noon supervisor at Washington School, Ariana Watts as sixth grade girls basketball coach, Nealy Hamson as science and agricultural teacher at the high school and Alan Benham as a custodian at Washington School.
Also accepted was the retirement of Mildred Pate as pre-k teacher effective July 30th.
Donations totaling $5,650 were accepted for the Brownsville School.
A kitchen sink and kitchen range was declared surplus property. This equipment will be sold by sealed bid.
And final action was approved on revision of 17 Board policies.
The Board went into closed session at 7:22 p.m.
In the closed session, John Goemaat was employed as a full time bus driver, Michael Flechs as part time custodian at Brownsville School, Amy Whitley as the junior high cheerleading coach, Ashley Elliott as the building secretary for Jefferson school, and Gail Dusch as the Brownsville building secretary for the upcoming school year.
