Wabash Valley College recently added two new courses to its Summer 2017 schedule. WVC continues to draw online students from across the nation and the world.
“We recently added Quantitative Reasoning, MTH 1104, and Calculus and Analytical Geometry III, MTH 2173, to our summer schedule,” said Allen Brown of WVC’s Department of Mathematics. “Quantitative Reasoning is a general education math course. It is applicable to almost all college majors and easily transfers to most universities. Calculus III is the third semester of the traditional sequence engineers and scientists need.”
Online courses let WVC attract students from across the nation. Brown continued, “We at WVC have a growing reputation as a low-cost, high-quality college offering online courses that transfer to universities and colleges across the United States. We regularly attract students who’ve never been to Mt. Carmel.”
The best and brightest now attend WVC virtually. “We enroll students from the United States’ best universities,” Brown explained. “I’ve had a student from the University of California at Berkley take my summer Introduction to Statistics, MTH 1131. She had just graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree and wanted a statistics course before starting graduate school at Berkley in the Fall.”
Brown has also had inquiries from Harvard University. “Many students simply search nationwide for online classes. They look for accredited schools offering the lowest tuition for quality classes. Wabash Valley College seems to fit the bill for these types of students!”
WVC’s online courses consistently see students from such faraway states as Texas and California. Students from the WVC International Program often continue their education while home in their native countries during the summer.
“The past few summers have seen online students in Europe, Hong Kong, China, and Vietnam,” said Brown. “The Internet is obviously worldwide, which enables students to continue their education from almost anywhere.”
Online classes are not for everyone, Brown cautioned. “Online learning places more responsibility on the individual student. A student can easily “ignore” an online class simply by avoiding logging-in. Summer classes move quickly, so missing a few days can put a person behind. It is important students maintain a steady work-pace and manage their time wisely.”
The two additional courses join long-running courses in statistics, college algebra, and trigonometry. WVC online courses have asynchronous discussion areas where students can ask, and answer, questions any time, and any day, of the week.
According to Brown, online classes completely break the mold of traditional lecture courses. Students work interactive homework questions at their own pace while covering the same material contained in face-to-face courses.
Wabash Valley College offers online classes in economics, business, marketing, environmental geology, physics, chemistry, political science, world history, US history, and creative writing.
