IECC TRIO SSS HOLDS ESSENTIAL SKILLS WORKSHOP

IECC TRIO Student Support Services students recently met on the WVC Campus for their last workshop of the year, the “Essential Skills” workshop.  Students from the IECC campuses were in attendance. 

On Saturday, March 25, the IECC TRIO Student Support Services program met at Wabash Valley College for the last workshop of the year, the “Essential Skills” workshop.

 

Topics included in the day’s events were:  “Life Skills for Scholars,” presented by Director of TRIO SSS Thomas (Wain) Davis; “Speed Interviewing,” a formal business luncheon; “Elevator Speech,” presented by  Tayna Smith, and a presentation about the importance of thank-you cards.

 

Present at the business luncheon were dignitaries from IECC, Mayor of Mt. Carmel William Hudson, Toni Brines of Edward Jones Investments and a Director of the WVC Foundation, Brenda Glover of the OCC Foundation,WVC  Dean of Instruction Robert Conn, Assistant Dean of Student Services Andi Pampe of OCC, and WVC faculty members Dave Wilderman and Jill Winter.  During this period, each guest sat at a table with students which gave the students an opportunity to network and from which at least one student gained an internship.

 

The mission of TRIO Student Support Services is to “provide educational services and cultural experiences to underrepresented students, empowering to achieve lifelong success.”

 

Director Wain Davis said, “I was extremely pleased with the “Essential Skills” workshop.  We had positive feedback from our honored guests and from the students.  I firmly believe that these skills will help set our students up for success throughout their lives.”
