Two arrested on multiple charges by Carmi Police following traffic stop

Two Carmi residents are facing a list of charges following an early morning traffic stop Friday by Carmi Police.

At 1:24 am, Carmi officers stopped a car for an equipment violation on Main Street at Fairview Drive. The arresting officer knew that the driver, 30 year old Matthew Oberlender had an active warrant in White County for cruelty to animals.  Oberlender was taken into custody on the warrant, and was also found to have an expired driver’s license.

Officers then searched the vehicle, and discovered a spoon with methamphetamine residue, five hypodermic syringes, and a digital scale.  Oberlender was then charged additionally with possession of methamphetamine, possession of syringes, possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s license, and failing to register as a sex offender.

A passenger in the vehicle, 30 year old Jackie Oberlender, was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of syringes, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both Matthew and Jackie Oberlender were transported to the White County Jail and are both being held without bond pending a court hearing.
