In an effort to help the public make informed decisions in the upcoming Consolidated Election April 4th, we at WROY/WRUL News asked candidates in the contested races for the City of Carmi to fill out a short questionnaire.
Cynthia Attebury
Carmi City Clerk
- Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a 1985 Carmi graduate and a lifelong White County resident. My husband, Bryan, and I have been married for over 30 years with three grown children – Brad (married to Rachel Westfall), Brenton (married to Adrea Zieren), and Briley—and three gorgeous granddaughters—Eva, Raley, and Hayden.
I have been a medical transcriptionist for over 34 years, having started my career at Carmi Hospital, later working at Carmi Medical Center and eventually transcribing from home over the past 12 years. My husband and I own Professional Auto Parts where I have been the bookkeeper for the past four years. I also currently serve as the Hawthorne Township Clerk.
- Why do you want to serve?
We have raised our children in Carmi and now our children are raising our grandchildren here. The City of Carmi has been our livelihood for my entire life and I believe I can give insight and a new perspective on the day-to-day activities of the city. Changes in health care documentation have drastically reduced my workload as a transcriptionist. I am seeking the office of City Clerk so that I may use my experience to serve the residents of my hometown.
- What are the biggest issues you see facing your desired position? How do you plan to address these issues?
I feel like the duties of the city clerk demand great attention to detail, the ability to respond quickly and accurately to requests, and above all, transparency. I feel like these play right into my strengths as a person and as a worker. I am someone who has a lot of experience with recording information and I feel that would serve me well in preserving information from city county meetings for history’s sake. I am also someone who is always honest and up front with people. If I do not know the answer to a question, I will find out the answer as quickly as possible.
Above all, I am someone who welcomes dialogue and would do so both with the public and all of the city workers. I would look forward to daily interaction with the people of my hometown. I think it is an honor to be in a position to help the people of this great town on a daily basis, and I would never take that position for granted.
- What sets you apart from the other candidates? Why should voters choose you on April 4th?
I have worked in the constraints of deadlines and governing rules throughout my career as a transcriptionist. Being the City Clerk, I would again have deadlines and government mandated obligations to fulfill. I am a people person and get along well with others. I am organized, reliable, respectful, and dedicated. I will be available to the citizens and employees of Carmi by having set hours and will always be available by phone. I will make my vacations public knowledge to the Mayor and city officials as well as residents of Carmi. My door will always be open to the citizens and workers of the City of Carmi. I appreciate your vote and support for the City Clerk position and I look forward to serving you.
