Abraham Lincoln’s life spanned a period of great change, growth and struggle in our young nation, and the music of his era movingly characterizes these remarkable times. The collection of music in this project sheds light on one of history’s most beloved figures, not only as a remarkable leader, but as a man, who knew and loved many of these very songs himself. From bottleneck slide version of “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” to the pioneer melody “Hoosen Johnny” sung by Lincoln and his fellow lawyers on the 8th Judicial Circuit, to the powerful Civil War song “We Are Coming Father Abra’am”, the audience will garner a better understanding of what drove the interests and passions of one of America’s greatest presidents.

This wonderful musical event is free and open to the public. The program will be held at the First Christian Church in Carmi, Monday, November 14, at 7:00, immediately following the Society’s annual fall dinner. Those wishing to attend the dinner at 6:00 must make their reservations by Saturday, November 5 by calling Marge Brown at 618-382-4010 or Paula Pierson at 618-382-7633. Reservations are not needed to attend the program and it is not necessary to belong to the Historical Society to attend either event.
