Carmi City Council names new park, gets updates on city projects

The Carmi City Council met for the first time in July on Tuesday evening, and started the meeting with a resolution to name the 66 acres acquired earlier this year next to Burrell’s Woods as the Burrell’s Woods Bicentennial Park.  The resolution passed unanimously with no discussion.

Two other administrative resolutions were also passed unanimously.  Ordinance 1488 originally adopted on September 15, 2015 was renamed Ordinance 1488.2 due to another Ordinance 1488 on the books.

Language in Ordinance 1505, which regulates raffles in the City of Carmi was changed to clarify that raffle licenses were valid for 364 days.

Mayor Pollard thanked City workers for their work on Independence Day getting ready for the Bicentennial concert that was moved from Burrell’s Woods to the high school.

Alderman Headlee asked City Supervisor Mike Buckman for updates on several projects around the City.  Buckman said that work on Burrell Street is wrapping up, with Howell Paving scheduled to pour the buffer at the railroad crossing on July 15, weather permitting.

Buckman also told the Council that one Edgewood resident informed him that they received over nine inches of rain late Sunday into early Monday, which contributed to some flooding in the area.  Buckman warned the Council not to look at new projects in that area until an engineer examines the area.

Alderman Winkleman thanked the City on behalf of the Library Board for removing some trees at the Library and striping the parking lot.

Buckman asked the Council about his department’s obligations toward the boat ramp.  The Council was in agreement that residents could continue to use the ramp at their own risk.

Buckman told the Council that Sunday morning’s power outage was caused by a raccoon at the Bradshaw substation, and that workers had to physically change out the switch.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:51pm and the Council next meets on July 19.
