Chief Carter reminds residents to have a safe 4th of July

Carmi Chief of Police Jason Carter would like to remind residents that fireworks are dangerous and could cause serious injury and death.  Carter also adds that most fireworks are illegal in Illinois.

A good rule of thumb is if a product is labeled as a firework and makes any type of loud noise or explodes, it is probably illegal to possess in Illinois. Most of these items are readily accessible in neighboring state, however are illegal to use in Illinois.

The Carmi Police Department will respond to complaints of fireworks use as they are received.  Carter added that he just wants citizens to understand that fireworks are illegal to possess and that they don’t want people to get into trouble with use of fireworks, however, if officers respond , those who do are subject to all fireworks being confiscated and a citation could be issued.

Depending on the amount of fireworks an individual has, it could be classified as a Class A Misdemeanor, which could lead to an arrest.

Also, Carter would like to remind those celebrating with alcohol to be responsible and have a designated driver present and not drink and drive.

Chief Carter and the Carmi Police Department want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe 4th of July.
