Phelps to Host Free Community Shred Day

In an effort to help residents safeguard themselves against fraud, state Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, is hosting a free Community Shred Day with the Harrisburg Township Park District this Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the park’s district office at 921 Poplar St., in Harrisburg.

“Many folks in our community have a lot of documents that contain sensitive data and it’s important that they get disposed of properly and securely,” Phelps said. “Many people have been victims of identity theft and it is important that we try our best to prevent it from happening to others.”

All residents from the 118th District are invited to come out and bring documents such as old bank statements, outdated medical records, old tax returns, pay stubs, old bills, receipts, and credit card applications. AT&T will be providing a large shred truck in order to safely dispose of people’s personal information. There is a two box limit per person.

“It is important that crooks and criminals don’t get their hands on your personal information,” Phelps said. “No one should be worried that their information will be used against them, but it is important we try protect ourselves from that very real potential. I encourage everyone to come out and join me.”

Phelps represents the 118th District in the Illinois General Assembly, which includes all or portions of Alexander, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline and Union counties.
