Glorious Spring Concert by SIC’s Community and Concert Choirs May 1

Southeastern Illinois College’s Community and Concert Choirs will join forces to fill the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center will beautiful music on Sunday, May 1.

This two part concert will begin with the SIC Community Choir performing various works, including one of classical music’s most beloved choral works, Ave Verum Corps by Mozart and a rousing arrangement of How Great Thou Art by Dan Forrest.

“This arrangement of How Great Thou Art is absolutely beautiful,” said SIC Community Choir director Tim Green. “The audience is sure to love it.”

The second half will feature both the Community Choir and the SIC Concert Choir combined performing Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria featuring soloists Jennifer Roehm and Melody Ossi, and will conducted by SIC Concert Choir Director, Cory Garmane. This Gloria, the second of three composed by Vivaldi is arguably the most popular. This work is comprised of 12 movements, each based on a different sacred Latin text.

“Both choirs are enjoying the learning process of this work, mainly because it is fun to sing,” said Garmane.  “The fast movements are light and dancelike, with an air of joy and celebration.  The few slow movements are tender and emotive, allowing the performers the opportunity to be expressive and open.  My personal favorite is the second movement titled, Et in terra pax.  This movement is about peace of earth, and interplay between the voice parts is simply stunning.”

An added delight, SIC Alumna, Madeline Rogers will be accompanying the choirs and will present a special solo section as well.

“I have asked both choirs to put together a great deal of music in a very short amount of time, and they have met the challenge splendidly,” said Garmane. “The exciting thing about performing this Gloria is that we, the combined choirs, are able to give the community an aural impression and connection to the past. In performing this work I hope that the audience and the performers experience a life-changing musical moment – that they leave learning and experiencing something exquisite.”

The performance will begin 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1 in the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center. General admission is $5.  Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 618-252-5400, ext. 2486 or 2487, or 618-841-4649.
