An oil pipeline has leaked an estimated 48,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the Wabash River near Mt. Carmel according to the Illinois EPA.
The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a strong smell of diesel on Monday morning and confirmed a petroleum product present on the surface. Several agencies, including the White and Edwards County Sheriff’s Departments, Mt. Carmel Fire Department, Wabash County Water Rescue, Illinois Department of Conservation, and Indiana Department of Natural Resources have all responded to the spill.
Marathon Pipeline LLC, who owns the pipeline, told the Associated Press on Monday evening that they are still trying to determine the source and cause of the leak, but did shut down the Two Rivers pipeline system to help contain the spill.
