White County Sheriff’s Dept. investigates fraud.

The White County Sheriff’s Department received a report of fraud on Friday.  Stewart Poore of Springerton reported that he had sent a Moneygram from the Carmi Walmart to a woman in Texas named Neva Maxwell for $1526.23 on Thursday.  Later that same day, Poore sent another Moneygram in the amount of $509.50 from the Fairfield Walmart.

Poore reported that he was told he was entering a contest from Publisher’s Clearing House to win $485,000 and a Mercedes Benz.  The Sheriff’s Department contacted the Moneygram Fraud Unit about the matter.

50 year old James M Young of Carmi was arrested by the Sheriff’s Department on Saturday night just after 10pm for driving under the influence following a traffic stop on Fackney Street.  Officers observed open containers of beer in the cupholders of the vehicle, and Young failed several field sobriety tests.  Upon arrest, deputies discovered a glass smoking pipe on Young’s person.

Young was transferred to the White County Jail and was charged with DUI of alcohol, driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Young was released after posting a $300 bond.  The passenger and owner of the vehicle, Rhonda Tate of Carmi was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol.

S&E Towing removed the vehicle from the scene, and the Carmi Police Department assisted in the arrest.
