At Wednesday’s board meeting of the Carmi Kiwanis Club, officers and board members were forced to address the issue of the loss of David Port as not only a member, but more importantly an officer in line for the organization’s presidency in a matter of several months.
The Kiwanis Club voted Thursday to accept the arrangement put in place which keeps Alan Saunders as the club’s current president. Jeremy Jordan is the president-elect. Holly Healy moves up into the 1st VP position and Katelyne Wolff was installed as the new 2nd VP. By transferring from secretary to an officer position, member Kati Sturgal will now be taking on the role of club secretary and Amy McCarty will fill the remaining vacancy on the Kiwanis board.
The club also examined the recent lawsuit filed by the Carmi Lions Club naming the Kiwanis Club, along with other organizations and the City of Carmi as defendants. City Attorney and Carmi Kiwanis Club member Greg Stewart explained the lawsuit as a real estate issue concerning the Lion’s Den which was deeded to the club back in September of 1978. As so, a restriction was placed on the property that it be disposed of if no longer wanted to another active Carmi civic organization or the City itself.
Stewart said the Lions were wanting to sell the property and he advised them it couldn’t be sold, not to the City of Carmi at least, and that is where he believes the lawsuit was born out of. Stewart advised there was nothing the club or it’s members needed to do necessarily unless they were interested in purchasing the property.
