Enfield man arrested for DUI, drug charges after truck fire

An Enfield man is facing a list of charges after the White County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call from the Enfield Fire Department on Tuesday night.

Enfield Fire Chief Jim Bolin contacted White County Dispatch that the driver of the vehicle appeared to be intoxicated at the accident scene near the intersection of County Roads 500 E and 1595 N.  When deputies arrived, they found 25 year old Austin Scott Johnson attempting to walk away from the scene.

As officers made contact with Johnson, they observed he showed signs of intoxication, and Johnson failed several field sobriety tests.   Personnel from the White County Ambulance Service also reported Johnson had fallen several times before deputies arrived.

Johnson was taken into custody and a search of the vehicle turned up a single alprazolam pill, and when Johnson was processed at the White County Jail, a glass smoking pile was found on his person.  At the Jail, Johnson became agitated and broke the phone in the visitation room.  Corrections officers had to subdue the unruly man and it was reported that Johnson threatened to harm any law enforcement officer at that time.

Johnson has been charged with DUI, possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, and criminal damage to government property.

The Enfield Fire Department, White County Ambulance Service, and the Illinois State Police all aided at the scene of the accident and arrest.
