Carmi-White County School Board hears about need for more buses.

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Carmi-White County District 5 school board meeting, transportation director Bart King addressed the Board to give an update on the District’s buses.  He said that two more buses are due at the end of the school year, giving them a total of eight, but two shy of the number needed to have one bus available for each route.  King said they are looking at getting four new buses, as two current buses are getting too old, and projected it would cost around $11,000 to $12,000 to lease ten buses.  The District currently has ten buses that are just being housed and not used at all that King says the District is looking to sell.  In addition, the District would like to have up to six spare buses and King will have another update at the March Board meeting.

In the Superintendant’s report, Brad Lee said Greg Brown of Brown Feed and Chemical would like to donate the softball and football practice field now being built in honor of his late grandfather Archie Brown to the District.  Brown will attend an upcoming meeting to answer any questions.

The Winter Sports Banquet for High School Athletics will be held on Tuesday, March 15th at 6pm.  The Banquet will be held at the First Christian Church in Carmi.

Lee congratulated the CWCHS WYSE team for winning the regional competition held February 4th at SIC.  The team now advances to the sectional at SIU Carbondale on March 16th.

The District curriculum steering committee met on February 3rd at the High School cafeteria to establish a study committee to review the current English Language Arts curriculum for grades K-12 and make future recommendations.

The District received $1.3 million in revenue in January, including two State Aid payments totaling $377,000.  The State still owes the District about $306,500.

The Board adopted a resolution to establish a framework for decision making that builds upon a common mission, vision, and guiding principles held by the broader educational community.

In other business, the Board approved a request for unpaid medical leave for Gloria Kay Pretzch beginning February 25th through the end of the school year.  A donation of $3,694.60 from First Bank to Brownsville School was approved.  The Board went into closed session at 7:28pm.

In the closed session, Clint Wolff was named the High School boys track coach following Bart King’s resignation.  Cindy Coleman was employed as the High School assistant softball coach, replacing Jason Craig who resigned.  Craig will be calling the games on WROY/WRUL this spring.  Chris Lucas and Kayla Sutton were approved as High School volunteer assistant softball coaches.  The Board agreed to employ Shotzy Allen as the Nurse’s Assistant for the remainder of the school year, filling the vacancy created by Nancy Petrig’s retirement.  Finally, the Board appointed Kent “Pete” Fulkerson to join the Board in place of Rick Kuykendall, who resigned his seat.

The next meeting of the CWC District 5 Board will be March 21st at 7pm.
